Lethe (レーテ), also known by her other name Duchess (公爵夫人), is one of the main protagonists of Magical Girl Raising Project: QUEENS.

After Grim Heart's death, she became the leader of Osk's Faction. She's a Magical Girl with high performance and a very skillful swordsman who has participated in various Archfiend Cram School events before.

In Queen and Detective Tea Time, it is revealed that Lethe is another incarnation of Chêne・Osk・Baal・Mel.

It is unknown what Lethe's human form looks like since she stays in her Magical Girl form at all times.

Magical Girl

As a Magical Girl, Lethe has light gray hair with orange streaks, which is medium length and pulled back in a high ponytail. She wears an ornamental black helmet with a pink rose at the front with frills and a yellow diamond accessory hanging from it. Her horns are black and curly. Lethe's eyes are light orange, and her eyelashes are somewhat long. Her outfit is similar to an old-fashioned ballgown and seems quite refined and elegant.

Personality

Lethe is a poised woman with an air of aristocracy about her.

Like magical girls such as Grim Heart and Puk Puck, Lethe is a magical girl who was specially made to be "above" other magical girls, both in the ways of strength and status. As such, she tends to act in a way that is befitting of a noble. Despite this, Lethe's subordinate, CQ Angel Hamuel, sees Lethe as someone who is a mere caricature of aristocracy, likening her behavior to that of a clown imitating a noble.

Even with Lethe's superior demeanor, she isn't completely without humility. CQ Angel Hamuel acknowledges that whereas Grim Heart would demand to sit upon her throne no matter the place or time, Lethe is fine with simply sitting on a couch to discuss strategies. Regardless, Lethe is always seen being attended to by the Shufflin II, whether they are fanning her off, or holding up her dress so that she may walk. In other instances, Lethe is also seen being carried in a palanquin at times.

Though Lethe is stronger than average magical girls, she outright refuses to fight Puk Puck when discussing strategies with CQ Angel Hamuel in earlier chapters, telling Hamuel that she should instead buy Lethe time to escape. The reason was not due to cowardice, but rather because Lethe acknowledged that she would absolutely not be able to defeat Puk Puck if she faced her alone. This showcases her tactical, if not cautious, mind.

Lethe is quite serious, given her leadership position, but she also has a playful side of her that she tries to hide. In the side story Archfiend Cram School's Hell Christmas Party, she can't help but laugh at Archfiend Pam in her reindeer costume. She makes deliberate efforts not to smile when it is inappropriate to do so.

She ends most of her sentences with "eh". CQ Angel Hamuel finds this to be strange.

Magic

Confounds her opponents' sense of distance.

She can manipulate physical distance. She can change the distance between two objects without changing their appearances, thus confusing the opponent. As well as setting the actual distance to 0 to accomplish teleportation.

She can also move the position of objects in her sight. While moving the position, the objects will be affected by physical force, such as gravity.

Special Item(s)

• Opera Glasses: A pair of custom-made opera glasses. Whether someone is invisible, camouflaged, or concealed, the glasses can see through it all.
• Ame-no-Habakiri: A sword with several branching blades centering on one thick blade.
• Ame-no-Ohabari: A three-bladed sword.
• Ame-no-Nuboko: A spear with a very long blade.

(All the weapons above are taken from Osk's Faction's treasury. They all had unparalleled strengthening spells cast on them, were sharp enough that even a scratch from them would turn a combat-use homunculus into a black stain and had the nasty added effect of directly gouging out the soul of whomever they cut.)

Relationships

CQ Angel Hamuel

CQ Angel Hamuel and Lethe are partners.

Their relationship is purely based on business, often seen discussing tactical ideas with each other. While CQ Angel Hamuel views Lethe as an odd person, she otherwise respects Lethe as someone she serves under, thinking that she'd rather have Lethe as her mistress than the likes of Grim Heart instead.

While Lethe and CQ Angel Hamuel are cordial to one another, Lethe is still her superior and acts as such. She tends to order CQ Angel Hamuel around and gives her orders she cannot refuse, such as telling Hamuel to take the brunt of Puk Puck's attacks so that Lethe can escape instead.

They exchange playful quips with each other from time to time, though it's mostly Lethe scolding Hamuel for her sarcastic behavior.

Shufflin Ⅱ

Shufflin II and Lethe are partners.

They are often seen serving Lethe, such as giving her juice, fanning her, and holding her skirts so that she can walk without dirtying her dress. Despite this, Lethe doesn't seem to have any particular feelings about the Shufflin II.

Puk Puck

Over ten years prior to the events of QUEENS, Lethe was called into a business meeting where she met with Puk Puck for the first time. Given Puk Puck's magic, Lethe was brainwashed into becoming Puk Puck's friend and playmate for the day they spent together. The two of them played games such as tag and hide-and-seek. When the effects of Puk Puck's magic were gone, Lethe felt humiliated by how she had acted in Puk Puck's presence.

During the events of QUEENS, Lethe refuses to meet face-to-face with Puk Puck, having been aware of how strongly she reacted under her influence before.

Despite Lethe's best efforts to avoid Puk Puck, she ends up having to come face-to-face with her. In the duration of their battle, Lethe becomes more and more enchanted with Puk Puck, even with the use of her own magic to distance herself. Lethe becomes so frustrated with her growing fascination with Puk Puck that she bites the inside of her cheek until blood floods her mouth, distracting herself with pain.

In the end, the effect of Puk Puck's magic causes Lethe to turn the blade meant for Puk Puck on herself, unable to bring herself to kill Puk Puck. Lethe dies soon after from the wound, consumed with rage and failure until the effect of Lazuline III's candies soothes her, allowing her to pass in peace.

In Queen and Detective Teatime, it is mentioned that Lethe has introduced Puk Puck to things like anime and manga.

The Third Lapis Lazuline

Lethe does not meet The Third Lapis Lazuline until shortly before her death.

While initially consumed by rage that she had failed to take down Puk Puck, Lethe is influenced by Lazuline’s magic, resulting in her losing her anger and passing away peacefully.

Grim Heart

Grim Heart and Lethe are both leaders of Osk's Faction, as well as both being incarnations of the sage Chêne・Osk・Baal・Mel.

While her exact feelings about Grim Heart are unclear, Lethe has shown humility to Grim Heart in the past. Grim Heart considers Lethe a more inferior incarnation.

Osk's Faction

During the events of ACES and QUEENS, Lethe is the leader of Osk’s Faction.

Lethe is valued by Osk’s Faction for her social skills and ability to do any job she is assigned to without fail. Some members of the faction would prefer Lethe to be the main incarnation as opposed to Grim Heart.
